A Microbiologist and Virologist
A microbiologist and virologist with a basic education in Medical Laboratory Technology (Laboratory Medicine) from Medical College, Trivandrum, Kerala State, India, Professor Govindakarnavar Arunkumar has been teaching Medical Microbiology for Medical students at Manipal Academy of Higher Education since 1997 and has developed a post graduate programme in MSc (Clinical Virology) and teaches since 2010. He has established the Diagnostic Virology Unit in the department of Microbiology and it is recently upgraded as Manipal Centre for Virus Research (MCVR) under Manipal Academy of Higher Education.
Currently Professor Govindakarnavar heads MCVR and leads the Regional Reference laboratory for Influenza viruses established by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India at Manipal and the ICMR Virology Network Laboratory (Grade-1) at Manipal which also is a state APEX referral laboratory by NVDCP. His past research includes epidemiological studies on Respiratory Syncytial Virus infection in children and the prevalence of Measles, Cytomegalovirus infection in pregnant women, Influenza, Viral encephalitis, Dengue etc. His research interests include viral diseases, epidemiology and diagnostic virology and public health response during infectious disease outbreaks.
